About project

Period: 2016- present

Client: International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED)

Subject: Guides and research papers

The International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) is a leading UK research institute. They help Developing and Least Developed Countries navigate the complex ecosystem of climate financing, participation to COP, with a strong emphasis on climate and gender issues.

My Task Was

The IIED asked me to translate research papers, guides and various publications into French. These translations are either printed or made available on line.

Process

Projects often start as a PDF of a guide or paper into French. We provide a file that allows creating the mirror French document.

  • IIED material is often technical in nature. This often involves researching the topic in depth and gathering a real understanding of the topic.
  • Often, the guides and research paper refer to a precise UN or international terminology. The translation wording must therefore match the corresponding language used by researchers in French, or the wording of an international agreement (e.g. Paris Agreement on climate)
  • Using translation memories (TMs) and a curated glossary is a must. These two functions allow consistency in the terminology and savings for the client when sections can be reused.

Result

The IIED trusted us over many years to deal with their complex research material.

  • Over 50 projects delivered
  • Thousands of pages translated
  • Working on various formats and docuements ranging from 500 to20,000 words (Word, InDesign, PDF)

Conclusion

Working on IIED material is a genuine challenge: their documents and papers are the distillation of high level research. This requires pinpoint accuracy.

The guidance provided by the IIED is invaluable to developing countries and the IIED advocates for very good causes. That provides meaning to my translation work.
